One-word answers: how to tell if it's you, and what to send
Updated 2026-11-05
Short answer: Send one message that's easy to answer and gives her something real. If the next reply is still one word and she never asks anything back, slow down and let her lead.
Is it you, or is it her?
Look at your last five messages. If they're questions like "how was your day?", the problem may be your side: those invite one-word answers. If you've shared real things and she still says "lol" or "ya", it's probably low interest.
Messages that are easy to answer well
- "Rank these: brunch, hiking, karaoke"
- "What's the best thing you ate this week? I need ideas"
- "Settle this: is a hot dog a sandwich?"
When to step back
Two or three rounds of one-word replies with no question back is a signal. Reply less often, keep it light, and see if she picks it up. Pushing harder rarely works.
FAQ
Does "lol" mean she's not interested? Not by itself. "lol" plus a question back is fine. Should I call it out? No. Change what you send, or step back.
The free reply tool suggests a reply that matches her energy. Coax does it in your keyboard.
